Plans, coordinates and manages the volunteer program for the Area Command; recruits, trains, cultivates relationships and supervises volunteers; provides education and awareness of The Army’s programs and volunteer opportunities to the community; manages the program so that it retains an adequate force of volunteers ensuring ample staff to meet program needs; prepares records and reports regarding the same, processes and maintains volunteer applications, files and records. Maintains volunteer database and statistics. Manages the Angel Tree Volunteer Program; provides input during the planning stages for volunteer manpower needs and physical layout of facility, trains volunteers in every aspect of the operation; recruits and schedules volunteer force; visits application center and distribution center daily to satisfy volunteer needs; and thanks and publicly recognizes all volunteers participating in the Angel Tree Program. Works directly with the Emergency Disaster Services (EDS) to manage the EDS volunteers in times of disaster. Conducts classroom and field training for volunteers and staff on various aspects of disaster response; attends appropriate trainings hosted by Territorial and Divisional Headquarters and community agencies to maintain awareness; deploys volunteers for local emergencies and assists in recruiting and deploying volunteers for emergencies elsewhere. Writes quarterly newsletter; corresponds with volunteers in person, over the phone and through electronic communications on a regular basis; Supports internal media and public relations efforts by keeping counterparts advised of upcoming special events and volunteer needs; update and maintain online volunteer calendar and website. Under the supervision of the Director of Development, serves as an advisor to Echelon (Junior Board) and its Executive Committee and as such attends all Executive Committee meetings, assists with member recruitment, educates members about The Salvation Army and coordinates with Echelon Auxiliary members to execute service opportunities, events, meetings and assist with other tasks as needed. OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES: Serves as member of the Development Department team. Performs planning and work functions for special events, kettle activities and holiday feedings including Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Serves as the coordinator for the Community Room calendar.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Bachelor’s degree in public relations, marketing or related field and three years of experience or any equivalent combination of training and experience, which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Knowledge of effective implementation of recruitment strategies. Experience performing management, outreach, recruitment, and public speaking. Ability to follow instructions and work with limited supervision. Ability to build and maintain effective working relationships with volunteers. Ability to adapt to a fast paced work environment during busy seasons.
